Three Magic Items

In the games I run, all magic items offer some form of activated magical ability as well as passive bonuses, typically in the form of a number of gemstones set into the handle of a weapon or the face of a shield. When used the gemstones cloud and will need to spend a day under sunlight to recharge. Here are a few magic items laying in my mega dungeon just waiting for someone to find them.

+1 Spying Dagger, The blade of this dagger has two small round spaces about four inches apart cut out of the blade and two opposing gemstones set into the handle. Holding the blade against your face to peer through the slots allows the wielder to see through solid objects and view the outline of living things out to 30' but not undead, machines, or otherworldly beings. A gemstone will feel warm to the touch when this is done, and become cloudy after 60 seconds of viewing marking the end of the ability.

+1 Shield of Daylight, This metal shield has a motif of a sun on its face with 1d6 small gemstones arranged on it. At will the wielder may cloud one gem by touching it to cause the sun to glow as a torch for one hour. The wielder may also cause three gems to cloud in order to make the shield flash bright light, blinding any creature so affected causing a penalty as fighting in darkness for one round of combat.

+1 Whale Mace,  The head of this weapon is made in the shape of a whale with a gemstone in its mouth and is placed on a hollow metal shaft. The handle end widens into a funnel like shape. The wielder may pour a waterskin into the shaft of the mace and when the gem is touched water will spout from the blowhole of the whale, producing three waterskins of water.

  1. I'm almost certainly going to have to steal that gemstone idea! I love the idea of passive/active abilities for magic items in old-school DND.
