The Gorn River Valley, Part 10

Another installment of my discord game. This session had an exchange of prisoners and some plotting for the future. Read from part 1 for the whole story!

DM - Mikkel lights a new torch off of Tanehoth's, which is tossed to the ground.

A while passes and the shuffling of feet can be heard from behind the door. Soon it opens, the smell of tobacco flows from inside. Eight kobold women and four children walk from inside the room, their hands tied together and ribs showing. One is held back in the room, guarded by two dwarves with polearms.

Rottherd whimpers.

Shawn - Va'lar would place a hand on Rottherds shoulder "Hey pal, would you mind telling them what is happening, it'll be better if they heard it from someone they know."  While the door was open he'd do his best to look past the Kobolds and see what was inside

DM - Rottherd tells them in a mix of broken speech, soft barks, and gestures. The group looks you four over as he does, seeming to understand.

Inside the room behind the door you can see at least 6 dwarves inside, the room is 30' by 30' with the metal door in the middle of it's eastern wall. A wooden door is in the middle of its southern wall.

Todd - Mikkel holds his position watching the scene play out with a sense of unease.

Shawn - Once Rottherd was done speaking he would take a step forward towards the door "So a few days and then we leave correct? May I come back after we bring the Kobolds back together? To talk on less tense terms"

DM - The guard dwarves lower their polearms a bit as you take the step, the dwarve you spoke to in the kobold camp steps forward and squeaks out "Two hours and we'll help you leave from the main room, and give you the last girl then. If you keep the dogmen here longer than that and we will not help you, but will return the girl once you're all out of our prison. The women and pups are starved, they should leave the danger here soon."

Shawn -  "We were not expecting to get them out of here so soon, we aren't sure where to take them once we get above ground. If we bring them up now they'll be at the mercy of the forest. I need at least a day to figure out where to take them."

DM - "Fine, But we will not help you leave. If you try to attack us the girl dies, and I'm sure your friend won't like that." The dwarve squeaks out. Rottherd whines again. "Do you have an food and water for her?"

Shawn - Will reach into his pack and pull out enough rations and water for three days "Here, and you will not attack us either correct?"

DM - Counting the rations he squeaks back "We will not attack for four days. After that we will come, armed, to see why you're still here." The dwarve holds out a hand to shake.

Shawn - Takes the dwarfs hand and shakes it "Hopefully it won't come to that"

DM - The dwarf nods before taking a step back and starts shutting the metal door.

Todd - "Can I start unbinding them...?" Mikkel says in a whisper slowly reaching for his knife.

Shawn - Before the dwarf fully shut the door he'd speak up again "Would I be able to come back here tomorrow, just me and him" He'd say motioning towards Mikkel "to speak more privately"

DM - The dwarve closes the door, Mikkel noticed two sliding noises next to the handle of the door, then the dwarve opens the eye slit and squeaks out "You may come back, but we will speak through the door again."

Shawn - Gives a small nod "Okay...and yeah, lets get them all untied" He'd say before assiting Mikkel in untying the Kobolds

DM - It takes a few minutes, but you can untie them all. Some snarl at first but Rottherd snarls back, making them peaceful while you help.

The women seem eager to leave, Rottherd looks to Va'lar for instruction. Pakrath speaks up "We moving on now?"

Shawn - Gives a small nod to Rottherd at the help "Yeah, lets get back to the others" He'd say before motioning them to move, having everyone get into a good traveling formation  further away from the door "And Rottherd, I need you in the back, since you can see in the dark need to be sure no one is following us okay? "

DM - Rottherd nods and makes his way to the back with Mikkel. Tanehoth and Pakrath stand in the front with Va'lar. As the group moves around Tanehoth lights a torch off of Mikkels and moves to the front, the flame makes the young kobolds uncomfortable.

Shawn - Will lead the group onwards

DM - You lead the group out of the hallway, entering the cavern with runes on the floor. Which way do you go?

Shawn - Towards the east wall

DM - You head to the east, looking down the eastern hallway you can see 40' before the hallway ends and goes to the north and south.

Shawn - Will make his way down the hall before going south

DM - Heading south you travel 30' before coming to a side hallway to the east. Ahead of you, 20' away, is the Kobold camp.

Todd - "We bring good news!" Shouts Mikkel.

Shawn - Va'lar would lead them the rest of the way to the cave before stepping to the side and letting them all greet eachother

DM - As you enter the cave the women run all all fours, as do the men who were waiting. They rush to each other and stand, sniffing and hugging one another for awhile. Children cry as they hug their fathers, Women wail out as families are reunited.

Terriherd walks over as all this is happening, a canine smile on his face until he spots Rottherd.
"I'm sorry" He says to the one eared kobold.
Rottherd replies, "Fur have her, until leave to outside."

Shawn - Will stay by Rottherd as this happens, looking over at Terriherd "Yeah, we were able to get them all but one. We can talk more if you wish after eveyone has calmed down and ate. We got into a fight with some lizards which are out in the main room if we need more meat"

DM - "I'll send some of the others out for them, You helped us. I have something for you, follow me." Terriherd says, motioning you to follow to the south western hallway.

Shawn - Will follow right behind him "We gave the Fur food and water for the female they kept so she will be taken care of, once we go to leave they promise to give her back."

DM - Rottherd doesn't follow, instead walking over to the corner to sit with some other solo males. Pakrath and Tanehoth follow, both watching the kobolds interact.

Terriherd speaks once Rottherd is out of earshot "They all look starved, but okay. How was Rottherd's mate?"

Shawn - "She was no better off than the rest, but alive which is good...I didn't know that was his mate till just now."

DM - "The probably kept her to be sure we leave, It was Rottherd and I who first spoke to them." Terriherd says as he leads you down the hall way. You walk 10' before a side hallway extends 20' south, to the room with the flying things in it. Pakrath and Terriherd start to walk down this hallway. Terriherd leads you another 40' before the hallway turns south and continues the last 20' and ends at a door. Terriherd turns and tells you "Careful, one at a time." before opening the door about half way and entering sideways.

Shawn - "While I wish they didn't, it makes sense why they would do so."He'd say as they walked, following Terriherd's actions

"Careful bout that door, there's some hostile flying creature behind it"

DM - Mikkel follows Va'lar with his torch, entering the room slowly. Once inside with the torch you can see this room is 30' by 30' in size, you've entered from the middle of it's north wall. It has several bed rolls along the sides, and in the middle is a metal safe.

Shawn - Looks around the room, taking it all in "Was this stuff here when you all came here? Or is this from the cart?"

DM - "From the cart, we tried to open the box but can't. You can have it, very heavy." Terriherd says.

Shawn - Pats Mikkel on the shoulder "You got this right?"

Todd - "Heavy is good" Mikkel says as he creeps towards the safe. "Can I open it?"

DM - "You can try" Terriherd says, glancing up at the log overhead. "Va'lar help lower this down."

Shawn -  Gives a small nod, reaching up and pulling the log down

DM - The log lowers on a set of arms, you and Terriherd slowly move it to the middle of the door. "This fell in with the cart, had to protect the box."

Todd - Mikkel now takes out his dagger and an arrow and begins tapping around on the safe. Looking for weak spots or places where he can pry the thing open.

Shawn - Laughs a bit "Yeah, we've almost been knocked out by a few of those in our time traveling"

Todd - Mikkel giggles and shakes his head  as he continues his work.

DM - Mikkel finds that the lock has been damaged from brute attempts to open it, a keen listen and a careful touch looks like it could still guess the code for the dial.

Mikkel spends a few moments trying the safe, finding he can't seem to get it to open.

Shawn - "Was there anything else on the cart Terriherd? Whatever we can bring up and sell will mean more goods for you and your kin on the journey"

Todd - "Phew" Mikkel says with a sigh.

"Is there a  chance of us knocking it open with that log since i can't do this in a professional manner?"

Shawn - "Sure ya can't do it? And we don't know what inside, perhaps Pakrath or Tanehoth might be able to? Don't wanna destroy it if we don't have to"

Todd - "Good point. Let go at it for few more minutes before we get ask for a hand."

After a few more frustrating minutes Mikkel shamefully walks towards Pakrath.

DM - Mikkel leaves the room, heading around to where Pakrath and Tanehoth wandered to. You find Pakrath with two kobolds, throwing rocks through the small hole window in the door at something inside the room.

Todd - "What's going on here?"

DM - Pakrath smiles back "I found these guys throwing rocks at the flying things in there, thought I'd help." he says as he scratches one behind the ears, the kobold doesn't seem to mind.

Tanehoth says nothing as he holds the torch and looks at his friend with a smirk.

Todd - Mikkel giggles, "Thats great and all. But we need your help to see if you can professionally open a lock"

DM - "Sure, Show me the lock. There looks like their's a bow in here with the bats." Pakrath says before throwing another rock, you hear it bounce off the stones inside the room. "Just in case you want it."

Todd - "Maybe after we make some bat stew. Perhaps we'll find seasoning in the safe..." Mikkel says with a smile before leading his companion to the jobsite.

DM - The two of you return to Va'lar and Terriherd in the room with the safe. "That it?" Pakrath asks with a smirk.

Shawn - Having spent the time chatting with Terriherd bout various aspects of above ground life he turns and nods to Pakrath "Yeah, give it your best shot"

DM - Pakrath spends some time with the safe, before turning back to you two. "Can't hear the pins moving, the kobolds smashed it up pretty good. We'll have to haul it out or bring a couple crowbars with us to open it."

Shawn - "Would a pick ax work?"

DM - "Probably do more damage to the pick than anything, but we could try. Couldn't damage the lock any more than it is already."

Todd - Mikkel shrugs.

Shawn - "If not we can always come back tomorrow. " he says before going to grab one of the pickaxes "was there anything else down here you wanted to show me Terriherd?"

DM - "Anything in the safe is yours for helping us. I also want to ask a favor." Terriherd says, looking you in the eyes.

Shawn - Va'lar would stop and walk towards Terriherd "What do you need?"

DM - "I need help finding a place to settle once we're out of here. You mentioned building a home from wood. Can you do that?" Terriherd says, not looking away.

Shawn - Nods a little bit "I personally cannot, but with some coin, and some work, I believe we can get it done"

DM - Terriherd smiles wide, showing all his teeth. "We have coin, a whole pile of it. You help us make a home and we help you when you need."

Shawn - “Sounds like a wonderful plan my friend” he’d say holding his hand out

Todd - "Perhaps we'll haul the safe to the entry room after the kobolds make it out safe and go at it with crowbars like you suggested."

DM - Terriherd shakes Va'lars hand, gripping a little too tight and shaking for a little too long.

"I don't know if the dwarves would appreciate us staying after the kobolds leave." Pakrath says while waiting for Va'lar to return with a pickaxe.

Todd - Mikkel bites his lip. "I'm not fully comfortable with a large metal object weighing us down on a humanitarian mission but it might be the case if the dwarves will act  like you say..."

DM - "We can use that pulley you have to haul it up, get it out of here with us." Pakrath suggests as Va'lar and Tanehoth return with a pickaxe.

The torch Mikkel is holding flickers as they enter, ready to burn out.

Todd - "Very true! Get some good use out of it." Mikkel says as he attempts to light another torch from Pakrath.

Shawn - "Hopefully this works, if not then we will have to come back with crowbars." He says before turning to Pakrath "I'd rather not bring the whole safe with us, could draw unwanted attention"

DM - Pakrath tries to wedge the pickaxe near the door of the safe, unable to fit the thick tool into the groove. He rears back and slams the pick against the metal, shooting sparks as the metal collides and not doing much to gain entry. Terriherd barks when the sparks fly, scared by them suddenly appearing.

Shawn - Can't help but flinch a bit a the loud noise, but more so at the sudden barking "Shit...Don't think it's gonna work huh?

Todd - "Woah woah. Don't worry there buddy. Terriherd, it's like when we light our torches"

DM - "Why did it make fire?" Terriherd asks, staring at the pickaxe.

"No luck. A crowbar might fit, but other than that our options are limited." Pakrath says.

Shawn - "We can get a crowbar when we come back...and, it happens when metal hits metal hard, or when metal hits stone hard. Makes a small fire, kind of like this" He says before pulling out a flint and steel, striking it a few times just to get some sparkks going

DM - Terriherd watches, cocking his head to the side. "I think I get it." he says.

Shawn - Will put it away before heading to the door "So we will probably have to go back into town to get some more supplies for the journey. Also need to plan it out with Mikkel and yourself"

DM - "Okay, Will you be leaving again then?" Terriherd asks while everyone leaves the room. He resets the log before he leaves, easing the door shut behind him.

Shawn - "before the night is over yeah, we may need some of those coins you mentioned though"

DM - "I'll show you, the room with the armor." Terriherd says as he leads the way.
